Our player in the Jolicloud

Posted on | June 3, 2009 | No Comments

Yesterday Tariq Krim (Netvibes) and his team released an alpha of their new cloud based OS for netbooks Jolicloud to developers. It’s a new kind of OS that lives in the cloud and has support for, except for web apps of course, Windows, AIR and Linux applications.

Me and Eric were also very pleased when we saw that among the popular apps running in the Jolicloud right now is our project The Cloud Player. You can see our icon in slides 3/4 in the presentation above and if you watch the video embedded in the last slide you can see a live demo! Read more about jolicloud over at TechCrunch and check out The Cloud Player for yourself.

A feel good service for flickr

all-mailboxes-found-18-matches-for-search

Are you a flickr user? Have photos that are more than one year old? Then this is a service for you: Photojojo’s Photo Time Capsule.

Give it access to your photos on flickr and twice a month it will simply send you an email containing a few photos from a year back. Fantastic. I’ve been running it for a month now and on both occasions the email made me smile. One of the photos reminded me of some good friends from school that I havent seen in a while and thanks to the email we have now planned a reunion next week, something I’m really looking forward to.

At the end of each email you can also write a short message to yourself that you will receive one year later, a great way of making yourself remember good or hard times. Try it out and tell me what you think! And, someone please build something like this for twitter.

Stockholm Tech Meetups

Posted on | May 8, 2009 | 6 Comments

I love tech meetups. And although there are many of them here in Stockholm they are not always easy to find, especially not if you’re visiting or new on the tech scene. Because of that i started compiling a list of recurring meetups I like or heard good things about. This list is nowhere complete so if you are missing something, please let me know.

Tweetmeetup

Since Twitter is the hottest thing since sliced bread why not meetup with the twitterati in your city? Every month you can discuss the latest memes with your followers.

Third Thursday

Interaction designers (yes, techie enough) meet every third thursday to talk the latest Signal vs. Noise posts.

Fringe

A new media meetup where you can find interaction designers, hardware nerds and hackers.

Geekmeet

Geekmeet is organized by web developer Robert Nyman and features interesting talks on various tech subjects.

Geek Girl Meetup

This all-girl tech gathering was founded last year by awesome Andie, Heidi & Mengmeng and has already proven to be one of Stockholms best.

Cocoaheads

A must-attend if you’re into mac or iPhone development. Meets on the 1st Monday of every month.

Likemind

This monthly morning meetup is not only for tech people but you can often find a hacker or two sipping black coffee among the media people. Meets at 8:00 a.m. (drop in) on the 3rd Friday of every month.

Stockholm Django User Group

Django and Python developers meets on the 2nd Monday of each month to listen to presentations and discuss the latest news in the community.

EPiServer developers meetup

Writing code for this CMS on a daily basis? Then this is your meetup!

24 Hour Business Camp

I don’t know if this will be a recurring event or not but last time was so great so it’s worth keeping an eye on anyways. Great for starting up a new project or just for a fun hacking session. Founded by micro-entrepreneur Ted Valentin.

OF Syjunta

If you’re into sensors, actuators and OpenFrameworks, this is a hack session you can’t miss.

Wordpress Girls

The girls are definitely taking over. This meetup cover all things Wordpress so if you want to discuss trackbacks, plugins and themes, mark your calendar.

The web just got a bit more open

Facebook announcement from Jyri

Facebook openess from Jyri

Yesterday a lot of good stuff happened on the web, especially around Facebook. They first announced that they have opened up stream data to third party developers, data that previously was unavailable. Facebook calls this the Open Stream API and it’s a two-way interface letting developers not only get stream data (with a single request) but also interact with the stream in forms of comments, likes etc. This means that we very soon will see sleek desktop apps like Twhirl, Tweetie and Tweetdeck fully integrated with the Facebook stream enabling conversation with your close non-tweeting friends. There is something intriguing about having your entire social graph right on the desktop. Just like when Adium got Facebook Chat integration, i feel like my mac just became a little more social.

Facebook also released, and open sourced, a desktop prototype for Adobe AIR, try it out.

Next up was the announcement of OpenID support. Facebook will be the first big social network to support OpenID which is a distributed single sign on system. This makes having profiles, logging in and engaging in many different platforms on the web much much easier. Instead of having one set of credentials (ex. username & password) for each site, you can now use your Google information to log in on Facebook. I like OpenID because it makes sign ins, a common procedure that everyone needs, a lot less sucky and safer. Now they just have to fix some usability stuff and people might actually start using it!

I must say that I’m very impressed by Facebook. They keep on pushing new stuff and tweaking their platform while having ~200M users. It’s brave and exactly what we need!

SoundCloud raises €2.5 million

Posted on | April 15, 2009 | 2 Comments

Great news this morning, although It was hardly news for me ;). SoundCloud raises €2.5 million (roughly 27 million SEK) in a new financing round led by Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures. I was briefly involved in the project last year helping them with their API and third-party developer community. I’ve also built several apps on their excellent platform such as SoundCloud Player for Facebook, The Cloud Player and latest Listen To Blogs.

A massive congrats to my good friends in Berlin. Alex, Eric, Matas, Hannes, Sean, Katharina, Nils and Dave.

Update: Tomas Wennström did an interview with Eric, listen to it here and Pelle Sten did a video interview that you can watch here. Both in Swedish.

flickr, please implement Facebook Connect

Posted on | April 13, 2009 | 3 Comments

I just came home from a trip to Washington DC & New York City the other day and while I was organizing my photos over at flickr I noticed that very few of my pictures from the trip had received comments. And the photos that actually have comments have very few.

Since few comments is the usual case I didn’t think about it more until I, during the weekend, met many friends saying that they followed my trip via Facebook and watched my flickr feed closely. Why did they comment a lot on my status updates via Facebook and not on my photos over at flickr? Because photos are a less interesting social object, I think not.

Flickr has simply not reached critical mass among my friends. And registering just to add a comment is too much of a hassle. I could always just start using Facebook for my pictures instead but I don’t really want to. I really love flickr and think It’s superior to all other photo sharing sites out there and I’d much rather upload my pictures there than on Facebook. But photos are so much more fun when friends comments on, loves or hates them. So, flickr, please implement a way for people from facebook (and google btw) to comment on my pictures. I know that Facebook Connect is easy to implement and I’m sure it would increase interaction throughout the site.

It would make me a (more) happy user
